A rickshaw driver was brutally beaten up by army personnel in Goyalar Dil of Akyab.
On Thursday morning, 38 year Md Salim was parking him rickshaw near checkpost 354 when a military official from battalion 267 hit him with a gun causing multiple injuries in the facial area along with internal injuries. His rickshaw, the only source of livelihood was also seized.
At least three other rickshaws were seized by the military in the area.
The assault by the military official comes amidst a renewed drive against Rohingya operated rickshaws which threatens the livelihood of many destitute villagers in the Akyab area. Since the incident, terror has gripped Rohingya rickshaw drivers and many are keeping off the roads.
Rohingyas are facing increasing problems in earning a livelihood, thus creating food shortages for much of the populace. Activists allege this is part of a blueprint to expel the Rohingyas from Arakan state without attracting undue attention of the international media.
