Authorities have knocked down houses erected by Rohingya Muslims in Sidhar para of Maungdaw town on Saturday. As a result, eleven households are living under the open sky as the monsoon season starts in this part of the world.
Lawaka officials who supervised the operation said they can rebuild their houses if 200,000 kyats are paid. However many of the affected families have no earning members. The elderly women who head this households mainly beg for a living and have no way to arrange this money demanded by Lawaka.
In another incident, storm has destroyed seven huts in the IDP camp of Cinghali in Rathedaung. Victims say that even before this catastrophe, they have been living a miserable existence as they are forbidden from working by authorities and local tabbes. The destruction of the homes comes at a really bad time.
