BGP assaulted and extorted a man in Taimbru, Maungdaw North, forcing him to sell his house and escape the country with his family.
Yusuf Ali (29) s/o Md Yunus is a wandering trader (ferry ala) in the region who sells goods near the Bangladesh border. On Monday, BGP suddenly arrested him around 10 am alleging that he was helping Rohingyas escape to Bangladesh. He was also alleged to be in touch with Muslim NGOs which helped settle Rohingyas in Bangladesh.
During this time, Yusuf was severely tortured. He was asked to pay 400,000 kyats.
As Yusuf did not have the money, he offered the BGP his house. The house was passed to a local tabbe for the required money. He was released at around 6pm.
The next day, Yusuf crossed the border and went away to Bangladesh.
