A Rohingya man has been arrested and tortured in Kyauktaw on false charges of abducting a Rakhine man.
On Sunday evening, a Rakhine man from a neighbouring village came near the IDP camp at Mainkya para (near Nijhum para) to catch frogs in the waters. He stayed there till around 9.30 pm and then went back.
The next morning, a group of Rakhines came and told the Rohingyas in the IDP camp the man had not returned home and if they had seen him the previous night. Most of the Rohingyas said they had not seen anyone fearing reprisal, but one man identified as Lokman Hakim volunteered information saying he was in the area till 9.30 pm and he had seen the Rakhine man go back.
During the time, the Rakhine men jotted down the names of Rohingya community leaders in the area in a threatening fashion.
At night, the police came and arrested Lokman. He was taken to custody and brutally tortured. The Rohingyas in the IDP camp were also told that they had killed the Rakhine and would face severe consequences. They were verbally abused in foul language and obscenities were uttered against the Islamic religion.
The next day however the Rakhine man was found in his own village.
