Tabbes demand bribes
Many Rohingya Muslim residents of Kula Bil, Maungdaw North did not get their names registered in the census because of threats made by tabbes.
Tabbes told these residents that unless they came up with a considerable sum of money, their names will be incorporated in the BD list if they came up for census, implying that they are citizens of Bangladesh.
As a result, many people who could not arrange for the bribes are spending their days in apprehension and some outside their homes. Security forces often conduct night time raids and in these cases, they will be arrested as their identity cards have not been updated.
These Rohingya Muslims also say that tabbes might also inform security forces of the people who have not registered. Altogether many feel their near future in the country is uncertain.
