Around 30 migrants have been thrown from a ship that has docked at Sitaporika, Maungdaw South on Sunday.
The ship was on its way to Thailand when the authorities in the country increased their vigilance. In response the ship had little choice but to come back. However, the ship was only loaded with supplies for a one way journey i.e. there was not enough food for the passengers and crew coming back.
In response the traffickers threw some of the women into the sea saying they were eating up additional resources.
When they docked, the traffickers asked everyone to pay 200,000 kyats for their release. A few men protested saying they were not taken to Malaysia and should not ask for payment. They were also thrown into the sea.
Four of them managed to swim ashore. One of these survivors were however apprehended by BGP. He has been taken to Ang Dhang. The rest have escaped.
During the whole time, BGP monitored the whole situation and assisted the traffickers.
