Authorities have now found a way to claim that all migrants on board the second rescued ship are Bangladeshis.
Although there are many Rohingyas on board, when asked which country they wanted to go, all of them said Bangladesh. Migrants remaining in the country are likely to be harassed and detained indefinitely and few wants to take the risk. As a result when asked to choose between Bangladesh or Burma, everyone is choosing the former. So navy personal are starting to claim that all migrants are Bangladeshis.
Bangladesh is home to approximately half a million Rohingya refugees. Due to geographical proximity. It is the first destination of Rohingya Muslims escaping persecution in home. The decision of Rohingya migrants to choose Bangladesh over Burma comes as little surprise.
Another striking factor is the ease with which volunteers, who are ethnically Rakhines speak with the migrants. The Rakhine language is not understood by Bangladeshis but Rohingyas can communicate easily in this language.
One navy officer requesting anonymity has also informed Reuters that the migrants were speaking in the Rakhine language.
Burma is determined to show the world that the latest crisis was triggered by economically impoverished Bangladeshi migrants.
