A Rakhine mob chased away Rohingya shopkeepers from Buthidaung bazar (central marketplace) on Tuesday, according to our local correspondent.
The Rohingya shopkeepers had come to the proper arrangements with the authorities including police and BGP to set up their shops in the teeming marketplace. However the Rakhine mob asked them to leave.
“They told us that we were foreigners and we had no right to set up shops here,” said a shopkeeper. This was followed up with threats of violence.
The shopkeepers had to pay a substantial amount of money to the concerned people to get the permission. According to locals, the money will not be repaid and they have incurred a huge financial loss.
