A Rakhine mob has destroyed shops belonging to Rohingya Muslims and have taken over the property on Friday.
The shops at Kiangdong bazar (central marketplace), Rathidaung have been closed since the riots of 2012.
The Muslim shop owners had earlier requested the market authorities for time to remove their structures. The permission was however denied. As a result, everything was taken over by the mob.
The overwhelming population of the area has always been Rakhine Buddhists but there were about 75 Muslim households in their midst. But they were chased away during the 2012 riots and many were killed.
