Rakhine villagers backed by security forces have blockaded a Rohingya Muslim settlement at Pungná cwéng, Akyab.
The Rakhines and police allege that Muslims in the area killed one of their co-religionists.
On March 24, Rahmat Ali (40) and his son Md Ali (19) noticed a dead body of a Rakhine man floating in the Kaladan river near their village. They immediately informed their Rakhine neighbours of the body.
The Rakhines however accused the father and son of committing the murder. They were then inhumanely beaten till their body was broken and they lost consciousness.
Later the police also alleged that father and son, along with two other Muslim men had stabbed the Rakhine man.
Since then Rakhines backed by security forces have blockaded the village. As a result Rohingya Muslims in the area cannot go to work and as most are dependent on a daily income, they are in near starvation conditions. There are no food supplies in this village either.
