Say BGP in Maungdaw South
BGP have told Rohingya Muslim fishermen at Hashurata, Maungdaw South to pay 5,000 kyats every week to fish in the rivers.
On February 7, BGP told Rohingyas in the area that unless they paid 5,000 kyats per every fishing boat every week, they will not be permitted to fish in the river.
Around 50 Rohingya boats fish in the river of that region.
Fishing is one of the primary income source for many Rohingyas but in recent days the authorities are imposing strict restrictions on the occupation. In late January, a Rohingya fishing boat was robbed by Rakhine thugs, and fishermen have been randomly assaulted by security forces.
The crackdown on fishing threatens to worsen the already appalling humanitarian situation as livelihood options are becoming almost non existent in Arakan.
