The newly appointed Aishwaramu of Porang Chong in Buthidaung, Imam Hossain has already started harassing locals in his first week on the job.
Locals allege that he is extracting revenge on those who opposed his appointment. Most people in the village were against the appointment of Imam who is known to persecute innocent villagers.
Already a few Rohingyas have been pointed out to the police for possessing Bangladesh SIM cards. Many Rohingyas use Bangladesh phone numbers to keep in touch with their relatives and friends who had fled over the border.
Meanwhile a local said on condition on anonymity, “an Aihwaramu should be selected for his commitment towards upholding the rights of the people. But here the government chooses them on their ability to oppress the local people.”
