Security forces conducted a night raid in Baas Sara, Maungdaw South on Tuesday.
At around 2am, BGB and police guided by government collaborators entered the village tract and started searching Rohingya homes. Many Rohingyas were humiliated and cursed in foul language especially when small sharp household goods were found in their possession. Derogatory remarks were made against the Islamic religion.
Although they were normal household tools, the security forces alleged they were to be used against the Rakhine Buddhists.
One man who was known to use a Bangladesh SIM card was arrested on allegations of keeping in touch with terrorists based in that country. The victims Abu Yusuf however kept the Bangladeshi phone with an informal contract with the village headman on a monthly payment of 5000 kyats.
Many Rohingyas use Bangladesh phone numbers to keep in touch with their friends and relatives who have fled to the neighbouring country where the population is estimated at half a million. The authorities however allege they are being used to communicate with ‘terrorists’ based in that country.
While others were released from custody, Yusuf has been transferred to the court from where he is expected to be sentenced to a long jail term.
