The NLD has denied reports that the party is standing up for the citizenship of Rohingya Muslims.
On May 19, British newspaper The Independent newspaper ran an article titled “Burma’s opposition demands government gives citizenship to Rohingya refugees adrift on the Andaman Sea”.
The Independent quoted NLD spokesman Nyan Win as saying, “The problem needs to be solved by the law. The law needs to be amended. After one or two generations, they should have the right to be citizens.”
However Win now says that this are his personal views and he was quoted out of context.
The NLD led by Aung Saan Suu Kyi has been blasted by activists for failing to speak up for Rohingya Muslims.
