Myanmar’s leading NLD party has nominated four MPs as speakers for two new parliaments today where three of them are from ethnic minorities according to the party’s spokesperson Nyan Win.
The Chairwoman of NLD, Mrs. Suu Kyi in recent weeks stressed her commitment as to make minority aspirations a central pillar of her administration.
The party nominated U Win Kaing, who is an ethnic Karen as speaker for the House of Representatives and U Win Myint as speaker for the House of Nationalities, but both of them are MPs from her NLD.
However, she nominated an ethnic Rakhine MP from Arakan National Party (ANP) and an ethnic Kachin MP from Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) as deputy speakers for both upper and lower house. But all of them need approval by a parliamentary vote which will convene on Feb 1.
It’s still unknown that who will be nominated as president while Mrs. Suu Kyi is constitutionally barred from taking the presidency under a clause in the constitution.
