A Rohingya man has beaten up and been fined by police despite having the green card.
Md Noor was travelling from Maungdaw to Buthidaung town on Friday when police intercepted him and asked him to show the permission. When Noor produced the green card, police said this was not enough and proceeded to slap him.
Police told Noor that by registering for the green card, he himself has confessed he is a Bengali and thus a foreigner. So he needed permission from the authorities to travel from one area to another.
He was fined 150,000 kyats and told never to make the same mistake again.
Locals in Buthidaung town are saying that the incident showed accepting the green card would only increase the trouble for the Rohingyas as they will agree to be classified as Bengalis and foreigners. Earlier Rohingyas in Myebon township who accepted the green cards are still denied permission to move from one place to another.
