A Rohingya man was assaulted by the police and forced to pay 150,000 kyats on Friday.
The victim in 25 year old Maulavi Azizur Rahman, son of Halu Miah.
The incident occurred at Rangaboli ghat in Northern Maungdaw.
Police accused Azizur Rahman of possessing an illegal Bangladeshi phone and then started beating him mercilessly. They stopped only when Azizur agreed to pay a large amount of money.
Azizur is currently recovering from the assault.
Many Rohingyas use Bangladeshi phones to contact with their relatives who have fled to that country. At least 400,000 Rohingyas have fled to the neighbouring country alone following brutal persecution in Arakan where the present population is now estimated at less than a million.
