Police physically harassed the wife and daughter of a Rohingya Muslim man who had earlier been victimised by cadres belonging to the 969 movement, according to our correspondent.
After asr (late afternoon) prayers on Monday, around 10 members of the 969 movement armed with swords went to Lamar para, Napiter Deel in Maungdaw and staged a showdown. They went from one end of the village to the other crying out insults and abuses daring the Muslims to come out and fight them.
During this time, villagers went inside their houses and did not come out.
One men who was coming back from the market however fell in front of the 969 cadres. The 969 men hurling insults chopped at his bicycle, destroying his front basket and tires.
They went away after about half an hour.
Later the police came during the evening and went to the house of the man who had been abused by the 969 cadres. Here the police sarcastically expressed sympathy to the wife and daughter of the man, while touching their cheeks, and private body parts. They did not listen to the complaints of the victim however.
Locals say they did not call in the police to investigate the incident. They allege that the 969 and the police are in the same camp.
