Police and their Rakhine cohorts have stepped up vigilance in Maungdaw town and adjacent areas. The continuous patrols are harassing Muslim men and women, according to locals.
Women wearing hijab or burkha and are physically harassed in the name of frisking.
Bangladesh SIM cards are placed on the women and men. They are being fined from 50,000 to 200,000 kyats depending on their ability to pay.
The patrol on motorbikes comprising of police and Rakhine civilians were stepped up on Thursday. Previously the patrols were on bus but with the advent of motorbikes, the number of searches has increased resulting in more harassments.
The operation is in response to the ongoing conflict with Rakhine insurgents. However in Maungdaw Rohingya Muslims are the main targets.
