Security forces detained a man in Hashurata of Maungdaw South on trafficking charges.
On Saturday, a bus full of police personal raided the coastal village and arrested 45 year Hashem Ullah.
Friends and relatives of Hashem have been told he would need to pay 2 million kyats or be transferred to Maungdaw town where he might be sentenced for years.
Local sources say even if Hashem had some involvement in trafficking but he was a very small fish. Hashem was arrested because he was operating out of the syndicate operated by the big time traffickers whose racket is protected by government organs especially the BGP.
Hashurata is the base of notorious government collaborator Sawdeya Oo. The pro regime man operates a human trafficking ring with the full blessings of government representaties. The gang is known to kidnap women and children and force them into the Thailand bound boats where they are tortured for ransom.
Under the management of Sawdeya and the leadership of government officials and Rakhine politicians, Hashurata has become a hub for human traffickers, an area so notorious that outsiders stay way in fear of being kidnapped. Many locals have also fled over the nearby Bangladesh border to escape perseucition by this notorious gang.
Many Rohingya community leaders working under Sawdeya has become involved in the criminal syndicate.
Meanwhile sources say that Hashurata has emerged as the only notable point from where Rohingyas from Maungdaw, Buthidaung and Rathedaung townships embark on the boat this season. Many passengers from Bangladesh also board the boats from this area.
The BGP has been vigilant in protecting the trafficking business.
The regime has promised the international community to tackle trafficking but has a=only arrested only small time criminals. Also many Rohingyas who are engaged in social work for the community have also been listed as human traffickers fuelling suspicion the government might crack down on the civil society by alleging they are traffickers.
