Burma Times Desk Report: March 25, 2015
Rohingya activists have urged Pope Francis to say the word Rohingya and speak for the Muslim minority of Burma, dubbed by the United Nations as the most persecuted in the world.
The petition draws upon the sufferings of the Rohingya Muslim community and the persecution they faced since the independence of their country.
The term Rohingya is not recognised by the government and much of the populace. Instead they are dubbed illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, though most Rohingyas can trace their residence back to many generations.
Meanwhile, Buddhist nationalism that calls for Burma only for Buddhists is becoming increasingly popular among large sections of the populace. As a result other minorities including Christians find themselves abused by the state. Muslims however continue to bear the brunt of persecution.
