A pregnant woman has lost her baby after being beaten by police.
On Sunday, a group of Rohingya Muslims were trying to go to Pauktaw from Kyauktaw by boat when they were stopped by the police. When police asked why they were leaving Kyauktaw two of them said that because of restrictions on movement placed by authorities, they could not find work and were starving.
The reply angered the police and they started assaulting the two men. They then arrested all of the men, women and children in the party.
When they were taken to custody, the police learned that a pregnant woman Ramunnessa was the wife of one of the men who had spoken out. They then went to beat her till she lost consciousness.
When she was released next day, she was taken back to her village in Fozi para, Marma where she was operated on and the dead baby aborted.
All the others were also released on Monday.
The two men were however tortured throughout the night and released later on Monday after the payment of 300,000 kyats.
They have been identified as Hakim Ali and Naji Miah.
