A man recently released from prison has been paralysed by torture.
Sohel Ahmed from Patenga Boro Dil in Maungdaw was arrested in the aftermath of the 2012 riots. Police charged Sohel and his brother for carrying out attacks against Rakhine villages.
Local sources say they were defending their settlement against an attack by a Rakhine mob.
In prison, Sohel’s brother died in the torture. Although Sohel survived, he has lost the use of his hand. He was released from prison Thursday.
In the aftermath of the riots, thousands of Rohingyas were arrested by security forces. Hundreds died under torture in custody.
