Rohingya Muslims at Haddi Hola IDP camp in Akyab have not been given temporary documents in exchange for their white cards.
The displaced Muslims in the camp handed over their white cards to a local tabbe Jarail on Friday.
Contrary to earlier promises, they were not given the temporary documents that serve as receipts for white cards.
Locals fear that as they don’t possess any documents now, the government will identify them as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and expel them to that country.
Rohingya Muslims in the Akyab area organised a daring resistance of their neighbourhoods in the face of brutal attacks by numerically superior Rakhine mobs. Whenever Rakhines failed to take over, the police and army moved in to mow the defenders with machine guns followed by an orgy of rape and loot.
These defenders were later categorised as Muslim rioters by the government and it seems that the authorities will use the withdrawal of white cards to force some of them out.
