Eviction drive by BD government result in rape and robbery
Burma Times Correspondent: February 25, 2015
A Rohingya Muslim man in Bangladesh has been hacked in the head as he came forward to protect his daughter from rape.
On Monday night, a group of 4 to 5 robbers raided the makeshift shelters of Nurul Alam, Abu Shukkur and his daughter.
After the robbers had looted the huts of Nurul and Abu Shukkur taking mobile phones and cash, they went to the woman’s place.
As they were looting, one of the robbers tried to rape the woman in front of her two children. Her father Abu Shukkur stepped forward and tried to fight them off. During the struggle one of the robbers hit the man in the head with a chopper.
The commotion attracted the attention of the locals and the robbers ran away with the loot leaving the woman unscathed.
Abu Shukkur is in Teknaf medical in a critical situation.
Thousands of Rohingya refugees live in makeshift homes after the Bangladesh government evicted them from their villages in late January. They face regular threats from local hoodlums as they camp in the open.
