A group of 25 Rohingya refugees were robbed as they crossed into Bangladesh on Monday.
At around 6.30 am, a group of local miscreants intercepted the refugee party in Neela and snatched away everything. Victims say that those with good shoes also had to give them up.
One of the man who protested was mercilessly assaulted till he fell unconscious. The victim Amir Hamza (35) s/o Abdus Salam was later handed over to Bangladesh Border Guards by the robbers. The miscreants alleged that Amir was a thief.
Many of the Rohingyas had come for medical treatment, as they are not allowed in the hospitals of Arakan state. After losing everything to the robbers, they are worried on what to do next.
In recent times, Bangladesh Border Guards have asked local villagers to form vigilante groups to intercept Rohingya refugees crossing over. However the vigilantes have used this opportunity to rob Rohingya refugees.
