A Rohingya wedding party crossing over from Burma has been robbed in the remote Bangladesh island of Shahpuri Deep on Tuesday.
As the group consisting of 11 men and four women made their way into Bangladesh at around 5.30 am, armed robbers intercepted them and took away all their valuables.
Afterwards the group attempted to rape a woman. This caused the group to protest more vehemently and they raised a huge cry that was heard by local villagers.
In minutes, scores of locals rushed to the spot causing the robbers to flee without committing the rape. The Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) also rushed to the spot on hearing the cries.
Contrary to the trend, locals this time showed sympathy towards the refugees and raised money for them so that they could reach the Kutupalong refugee camp. Generally locals are hostile to the presence of Burmese refugees.
The BGB also did not arrest the refugees who are illegal immigrants according to Bangladesh law.
