The election commission has barred Rohingya lawmaker Shwe Maung from running in the November elections on grounds of his ethnic identity.
Shwe Maung says he received the faxed message on Saturday informing of his disqualification. The lawmaker had earlier left the ruling USDP to run as an independent candidate.
The election commission informed Shwe Maung that his parents were not citizens during his birth. However, Shwe Maung’s father was a police official in independent Burma.

In the last few years, ethnic cleansing and segregationist policies against the Muslim community has increased as nationalist groups become increasingly popular through the country.
