Security forces are confiscating smart phones from the Rohingyas and in many cases arresting their owners in the Maungdaw region.
Though the Rohingyas are generally let off after a heavy beating and fine, the smartphones are kept by the authorities. Locals are warning online activists based abroad that the security forces with the help of tabbes might penetrate the online groups on social media.
As the tabbes know the Rohingya language and Arabic very well, all information on the online groups will be easily known. The tabbes might also take on the identity of online activists from whom the phone has been seized and might use it to spy on others.
Online activists have been requested not to communicate over social media with people they don’t know as tabbes might use this opportunity to gather intelligence on pro Rohingya activists.
All online activists have been asked to be wary of suspicious people on the online groups. There are also concerns that authorities will flood the online groups with unwanted material including pornographic pictures.
