A Rohingya social worker has been kidnapped in mysterious circumstances from the Bangladesh border town of Teknaf on Thursday. His whereabouts are unknown till filing of the report Friday night.
Anwar Aziz has been a trainer for Burmese language teachers in the refugee camps for more than five years. During this time he also worked against gender violence.
On Thursday afternoon, Aziz along with his family started from Nayapara refugee camp to Teknaf for the medical treatment of his child. On the way to Teknaf, Aziz looked nervous after some continuous phone calls to his mobile, according to his wife.
On reaching Teknaf at around 3pm, Aziz told his wife to wait for him while he meets a friend. Since then Aziz has disappeared.
Family members of Aziz hung around the neighbourhood till 10 pm after which they came back. The next day they received a call saying Aziz was in their custody and would be released after the payment of 2 million Bangladesh Taka (33,052,000 kyats approx.). The callers also claimed to be from the Bangladesh police.
The exact identities of the callers cannot be confirmed.
