Rohingya woodcutters in Bangladesh have been heavily assaulted by armed men belonging to the banned group United People’s Democraic Front, according to our correspondent.
Eight Rohingya woodcutters from Kutuplaong and Shaplapur had gone to Naikhonchori, Bandarbn to cut wood about a week ago. On Monday, some armed men came and told them that if they cout wood from this area, they must pay them a share. The Rohingyas offered to negotiate saying that they will pay them once their employers came up with the money.
The negotiations went on for some time on the amount of money to be paid to the armed men. All of a sudden, the armed men asked the Rohingyas their identity.
When the Rohingyas said they were Burmese refugees, they started assaulting them. In the assault that followed some of the men had their body parts smashed.
After the assault, the UPDF told them that they would not have Rohingyas in their territory and next time they would be killed.
Some of the men are still in hospital. They are the group leader Noor Alam s/o Noor Hossain, Alam s/o Sabbir, Hakim s/o Kamal Hossain, Zubair s/o Kala Mia, Imam Hossain s/o Rafique.
