In an apparent U-turn, the parliament has ruled that Rohingyas and other white card holders will be allowed to vote in the upcoming national referendum on the constitution scheduled for May.
On January 21, NLD MP Daw Khin San Hlaing, submitted a proposal to exclude white card holders from the vote on constitutional referendum.
Parliament’s Joint Bill Committee, a powerful drafting body comprising members of both houses of Parliament, wrote an initial version of the referendum bill that barred white card holders to vote. However president Thein Sein sent the bill back to the committee recommending that it restore voter rights before reaching the floor for a vote.
328 parliamentary members approved the legislation, while 79 lawmakers voted against it. 19 abstained.
Members of the Rakhine National Party opposed the decision.
