Rohingyas in Zammoinna, Maungdaw North were forced to pay 900,000 kyats for hosting security forces and immigration officials who had come to the area on Friday to hold discussions on the green card.
The group of government officials held a meeting in the morning and informed all Rohingyas in the area about the benefits of the green card.
Earlier, a government collaborator in the area Noor Hashim had collected donations from all villagers to entertain their ‘honoured guests’ as he called them.
Locals say the donation money they were forced to give had been a big pressure for many of them.
After the meeting was over, locals hurriedly left the scene and later refused to come back and register for the green card. The government team however had a huge feast and left the area instead of chasing them.
Rohingyas refuse to accept the green card as it identifies them as Bengalis. They also refuse the identity card because it is reserved for naturalised citizens whereas Rohingyas claim they are indigenous to Arakan state.
