BGP has asked a mosque committee in Ang Dhang of Maungdaw South to pay a fine of one million kyats for repairing a mosque.
On October 13, a BGP commander asked committee members to report to them and asked to see the permission for making the mosque repairs. When the Rohingyas said they were making the repairs in respond to a declaration by president Thein Sein that they were free to make repairs to mosques destroyed in cyclone Komen, the BGP said this was not true and threatened them with arrest.
The BGP also said not only must they pay one million kyats, they needed to knock out the repairs they made to the mosque.
Rohingyas had repaired the minaret destroyed in cyclone Komen by raising donations from locals.
Earlier president Thein Sein declared Rohingyas are free to make repairs to their religious institutions destroyed in the cyclone. In practise Rohingyas making repairs to their damaged institutions have been forced to pay fines and destroy all the repair work.
