Rohingya Muslim community leaders held a meeting in Yangon where they expressed concerns regarding the government’s continuing refusal to avoid the term Rohingya during the screening process.
President Thein Sein has said that Muslims in the Arakan region will be screened to verify if they are eligible for citizenship. However instead of the term Rohingya, the term Bengali will be used. The declaration comes as international attention is focused on the plight of migrants escaping Arakan for Malaysia.
Rohingya leaders say they will not agree to identify themselves as Bengali.
The Burmese government has stubbornly rejected the term Rohingya to describe the community instead saying they are Bengalis.
