Tabbe Sawdeya Oo has returned to Hashurata, Maungdaw South and has resumed his ‘official duties’, according to sources.
Sawdeya was shot by unidentified attackers on August 14. His treatment was arranged by the government and he seems to have recovered very well. On returning to Hashurata, he has given a war cry and said the enemies of Myanmar shall be dealt with.
Sawdeya has told the official authorities that some Muslims in the village shot him because he was trying to convince the people to accept the green card.
Sources say the shooting has resulted in Sawdeya getting more popularity in government circles. On Monday, high ranking police and BGP officials along with village administration came to Hashurata and ordered senior members of the community to converge. The Rohingyas were then told to co-operate with Sawdeya and do as he commanded.
They were further asked to provide eight able bodied men who would keep watch on Sawdeya’s house on a 24 hour basis. Their fees would be paid by the people of Hashurata.
Additionally, Sawdeya had the right to collect his ‘medical expenses’ from the people of Hasurata.
Locals feel that Sawdeya has been given a blank cheque to extort money from them.
Sawdeya is infamous for kidnapping Rohingya women to be raped by security officials. He is also known to preside over a criminal ring that has turned the coastal area of Hashurata into a haven for international human traffickers. His reign of terror in the countryside has virtually depopulated the region with many, especially young women fleeing over the nearby border into Bangladesh.
