Villagers in Hashurata of Maungdaw South are passing their days in terror after police and Hlun Htein raid the village tract in search of supposed illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
The raid started on Monday after tabbe Saudia told the local administration that over 30 Muslim families from Bangladesh have been living illegally in Hashurata over the last few years.
Many families have left their homes and are sleeping under the open sky in midst of the monsoon season as a result of this raid. Villagers however say there have been no arrivals from Bangladesh but on the contrary, many have fled to that country. One villager says, “many Muslims have fled this area and gone to Bangladesh. No one has come from Bangladesh to the area.”
Incidentally tabbe Saudia, also the village headman has created a reign of terror in this coastal village tract. He heads a human smuggling ring in the area that has also kidnapped scores of innocent people, mostly young boys. Hashurata is one of the primary trafficking spot in the Maungdaw area.
Saudia along with security forces have raped many women. The situation is so bad that most young women cannot come outdoors while many have escaped to Bangladesh or made the risky journey by boat to Malaysia.
