Two Rohingyas and five Bengalis have been rescued from human traffickers in Cox’s Bazar region of the country, according to our correspondent.
On Saturday morning at around 6am, police on the basis of a tip off raided a cave in Himchori of Cox’s Bazar and rescued the seven men. The traffickers had kept them in the secret location till the boats arrive.
Many Rohingyas and some Bengalis risk a dangerous journey by sea to Malaysia. The migrants have to face abuse by human smugglers who ransom the passengers in Thailand till their families pay the money.
The vicitms have been identified as Md Babu, Mijan Rahman, Md Lalu, Milon Miah, Md Mamun, Robin Bhuiyan and Md Kodom Ali.
The Bengalis have come from the impoverished Norther region of Bangladesh.
Meanwhile a source told Burma Times that the two Rohingyas might have been taken to the cave against their will. Rohingyas and vulnerable locals are often kidnapped and put on the boat.
