A trafficking ship unable to land in Thailand has anchored in a remote island near the Akyab coast.
The traffickers asked the migrants to contact their families and ask for a ransom of 200,000 kyats.
So far one inhabitant, a resident of an Akyab IDP camp has been freed after paying the ransom money. Sources say that around 18 others might be freed as early as tomorrow.
The fates of other passengers remain undecided as their families are still trying to arrange the money. The prisoners have nothing to eat and all food rations are reserved for the traffickers.
There are children on board who are also going without food.
Three migrants have been gunned down during the voyage.
