Phuketwan editor Alan Morison has been forced to shut down his news website in Thailand as he and along with colleague Chutima Sidasathien
face trial on criminal charges on Tuesday. If convicted, they might face seven years in prison.
Morison has announced that Phuketwan will close this week and may never resume because of uncertainty over unprecedented criminal defamation charges brought against him and colleague Chutima Sidasathian by the Royal Thai Navy.
The Thai navy, heavily involved with the human trafficking of Rohingya Muslims is furious at Phuketwan for writing about their involvement in the crime.
The news outlet had broken numerous stories on the plight of Rohingya refugees over seven years. The Thai government is uncomfortable with these stories as they cast light on the crimes of many in Thailand, including powerful military and navy officials.
