Almost a hundred families in Punga Cweng, Akyab are living in starvation like conditions after the military has camped besides the village.
The military battalion 539 camped near the village following clashes with the insurgents in Kyauktaw.
All Rohingya villagers are now subjected to forced labour in two shifts. One half of the male population works a 12 hour shift by day and the other from evening.
They are otherwise forbidden to leave the village. Locals say that Punga Cweng has become a prison without food.
The situation in the village has been tense for over a month now. Rakhine villagers backed by security forces imposed a bloackade on the Muslim populace after accusing them of murder.
On March 24, Rahmat Ali (40) and his son Md Ali (19) noticed a dead body of a Rakhine man floating in the Kaladan river near their village. They immediately informed their Rakhine neighbours of the body. The Rakhines and the police however alleged that father and son had committed the murder. Since then a blockade has been in place.
