A tabbe has extorted a poor man at Hashurata, Maungdaw South, according to our local correspondent.
The tabbe known as ‘Saudia’ alleged that Lalmot (65) had secretly married the eldest of his five daughters without proper permission.
Under Burma’s law, Rohingya Muslims must seek permission from the authorities for marriage and must pay a fee of at least 15,000 kyats.
Lalmot has not been able to afford this money and could not marry off any of his daughters. In spite of that, the tabbe’s threats forced him to pay a formidable sum.
Locals say that Saudia made this sudden extortion because he had run out of money to feed his narcotics habit.
