A local Tabbe is pocketing money from Muslims seeking permission for marriage.
Under Burma’s law, Rohingya Muslims must seek permission for marriage and pay a substantial money to authorities to get the approval.
However Mamunur Rashid, a local representative (Huk kata) of Siddhi para, Maungdaw is pocketing the money from marriage claims.
Sultan Ahmed, s/o Ali Ahmed paid 150,000 kyats to Mamunur to get approval of his daughter’s marriage many months back. As things were not proceeding, he went to the house of the Tabbe on Monday.
Instead Mamunur and his gang punched and kicked Sultan threatening him with police action.
Another man Md Yunus, s/o Maulavi Kamal had paid 200,000 kyats for permission of his brother’s marriage. When he inquired about the permission, the tabbe made verbal threats and cursed him.
