A meeting of community elders was held at Taimru on Sunday, according to our local correspondent.
The meeting was presided by a tabbe in the rank of Aishwaramu. The tabbe told the people that they must hand over their identity cards on March 31 at two centres in the area.
Elders asked the tabbe about the future to which he told them not to worry. All they needed to do was apply to the government as Bengalis according to the 1982 citizenship law and they will be given the green card, i.e. naturalised citizens with foreign ancestors.
The Rohingyas asked the tabbe if they could apply as Rohingyas instead of Bengalis. The tabbe said that the government did not recognise the term Rohingya and they could not apply as such.
