A local tabbe at Kiladong, Maungdaw South is on a extortion spree as the census goes on in the area, according to our correspondent.
On Friday, Maulavi Hassan (26) s/o Fazal Ahmed became his latest victim as he was forced to pay 200,000 kyats. Sultan told Hassan that he was on the suspect list for killing a policeman last year. When the police found his identoty, said Sultan, they would arrest him.
The tabbe promised Hassan that if he was paid the money, he would be crossed off the list.
Our sources say Hassan was not on any supects list.
Kiladong is the site of an infamous massacare in 2014 when scores of Muslims, including women and children were killed by a Rakhine mob backed by security forces. The government however refuses to acknowledge that such a killing had taken place. They however say that a policeman was killed by villagers.
In the massacare, many houses were burned down and many lost their identity cards. After things had cooled down, the government issued special identity cards. But Sultan says that these id cards have no significance and they must pay money to stay out of trouble. Along with the police, the tabbe is collecting money from many families as the census goes on.
