Seven Rakhine school teachers have left Maungdaw for fear of IS militants.
Amidst much fanfare about militants taking up position in the township, the teachers said they felt their security was no longer guaranteed and left the city amidst much publicity on Wednesday.
Locals fear the militant propaganda might be a prelude to violence against the Muslim community.
Independent observers say there is no IS presence in the region.
Many Rakhines have been calling for an increased military presence in the region. Security has already been beefed up with the military increasing their presence in the remote hills and jungle, especially close to the Bangladesh border.
