A tense situation is prevailing around Kyuaktaw town with many Rohingya Muslims spending sleepless nights fearing attacks by Rakhine gangs. Fears increased as Rakhine community leaders spread rumours that a dead body found on Thursday carried burn attacks proving the Rohingyas had inflicted immense torture on the man before killing him.
Our sources say a dead body found in the Apak Khal has been in water for many days and too badly mutilated to be recognised as Rakhine or Rohingya. Also there were no burn marks on the corpse. Additionally it seems unlikely that anyone killed near Kyauktaw town as alleged by the Rakhines would turn up in Apak Khal.
Also our sources confirm the allegedly missing man is in Kyauktaw town turning up in good health two days after he went missing on Sunday from a Rohingya area.
In the past few days, many Rakhine gangs numbering hundreds of people armed with sharp weapons have taken up positions near Rohingya villages following rumours Rohingyas have killed two Rakhine men in spite of no hard evidence.
As a result of the siege, locals fear an immediate massacre.
Security forces meanwhile raided different Kyauktaw villages and made a list of Rohingyas who had supposedly assisted in the murder and cover up. Most of the Rohingyas who made it to the police list are the more educated community members known for their commitment to social work.
