The situation in Rajar Bil, Rathedaung has deteriorated as security forces increase vigilance in the area and make arbitrary arrests. Those arrested are brutally tortured in custody.
As evening falls, Rajar Bil becomes a ghost town as everyone leaves their homes and goes to a neighbouring village. They fear that security forces will arrest and torture them.
A fortnight ago, six Muslim men suddenly went missing from police custody in Kiang Dong. While their relatives allege they were killed, police declared that they had escaped and cracked down on the whole village of Rajar Bil.
The six men went missing after being brutally tortured.
In the immediate aftermath, security forces arrested three sons and a brother of four of the missing men. They were released after a week of torture in custody.
Now the police have arrested one of their own collaborators who they allege to be a Rohingya spy. Md Amin is the Aishwaramu of the area and known to be a pro government man but sources say there is a possibility that behind the scenes he had tried to help local villagers.
Some of the others arrested included Fedam (35), s/o Zokoria, Nobi Hossain (32), s/o Md Taher, Pottika (20), s/o Abdus Salam, Aman Ullah (44), s/o Fula Ali, his brothers Rahmat Ullah (46) and Ismail Ullah (16).
On Friday, two others have been arrested.
All those arrested have been brutally tortured in custody.
A month ago, BGP shot a 14 year girl Khaleda Begum in the area without any apparent reason.
A few days before that, a few men had their beards burned for saying they were not Bengalis.
