Tensions are running high in Maungdaw town ahead of a planned anti Muslim protest rally on Sunday.
Rohingya Muslims in Maungdaw are living in fear as gangs of Rakhine youth and Buddhists monks are vandalising property and cursing Muslims in abusive language.
At least three Rohingya Muslims has been severely injured after Rakhine youths beat them with an iron rod in front of the currency exchange in Maungdaw bazar. One of them is in a critical condition after being hit in the head. Police and BGP present in the scene did not take any action against the miscreants.
The miscreants also smashed shops and motorbikes.
One source says the military later arrested one of the gang leaders of the miscreants. The claim cannot be confirmed.
Earlier in the morning, some Rakhines were seen breaking their own vehicles as a sign of rage towards Rohingya Muslims.
Anti Muslim groups are scheduled to hold a massive rally on Sunday protesting the ‘rescue’ of Rohingyas.
