Police have pressed terror charges against 24 Rohingya Muslims in Mamra, Kyaukpyu, according to our local correspondent.
The 24 men are known in the neighbourhood for their commitment to uphold the rights of Muslims in Kyaukpyu. Locals say that their fame has brought about their downfall.
The charges pressed by police on Tuesday have so far resulted in six arrests. Locals fear that they will face torture in custody. Scores of Muslims arrested since 2012 have died under immense torture in the prisons of Arakan.
18 of the accused are in hiding.
The allegations of terrorism against the 24 men have been spearheaded by two tabbes Habibul Bashar and Osman Johar.
